STORYBOOK – The story about a journey

The event was arranged by the PR company Beside Digital works in partnership with.

The idea was to create an interactive installation articulated in five stations to guide the audience through the story.

People would check-in at the entrance where they will receive a lanyard with a Bluetooth tag. They will use it to register into a computer providing their name and choosing one of the available characters of the story.

The single person would choose one of the five stations available to start the game and proceed through the others at their best convenience during the evening, to complete all the five adventures. Any station will automatically log them in as soon as they get close with their tag.

At the end of the evening, they could leave their email address at the check-out station to receive the score they overall reached out.

Due to the nature of the whole story – articulated in five episodes – to choose a book as a 3-dimensional shape for all the stations seemed a simple and effective way to take the audience through a journey.

It wanted to have a nice design and to be able to allocate all the electronics – fine looking and efficient at the same time.

Soon we realized both the layers of wood would need a CNC cut on both sides. The top, to be able to allocate the decoration in white acrylic in the front and some of the electronics on the inside. The bottom for the same purpose on the inside and to allow the stands in frosted acrylic to engage.
We had to make sure the fabrication process was repeatable and consistent in order to be able to produce 5 copies for the exhibition.

To design not only the aesthetic and the geometry of the book, but also the jigs for the double CNC cuts was crucial.
It was important for us to be able to open the case at any time to have access to the electronics. It was challenging to design a fastener connection with hidden t-nuts underneath the white acrylic, to be able to tighten screw-bolts with no visual impact.
Another essential aspect was to make sure to have the exact dimensions of all the electronics that were going inside, as 2 layers of 3/4″ were really precise for the amount of hardware the book needed to allocate inside, to work correctly.

It took us 2 weeks of intense and hard work to produce all the 5 samples for the exhibition. It was also a great opportunity to learn and improve our skills as designers and fabricators thanks to the many challenges we had to face.

The final result was really a beautiful object of attractive design and fine fabrication.
